The Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort & Casino

Opened in 2009, the Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort & Casino is a 12-floor 503-room property with amenities that include an infinity pool facing the T-Mobile entertainment district, spa, and the post-2020 obligatory pickleball court. The Puente Guillermo Esteves (bridge) separates the Convention Center District from Isleta de San Juan, where Old San Juan occupies the western third of the island. Without major traffic, you should be able to get to the Sheraton Puerto Rico from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) in less than 15 minutes.

amenities at the Sheraton Puerto Rico

Amenities at the Sheraton Puerto Rico include the Zen Spa Retreat, where services include use of the sauna and steam room. In the fitness center, treadmills face the pool, while the equipment choices are above average when you take into account the leg press machine, which is normally only found in larger dedicated gyms. There’s also the casino, but the real star is the fourth-floor pool area. That includes the infinity pool facing the T-Mobile Entertainment District and the hot tub. The pickleball court is off in the corner. Day passes are available via ResortPass.

mutuo and other dining options at the Sheraton Puerto Rico

While the Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant Mutuo Sabor Nikkei is the Sheraton Puerto Rico’s star culinary attraction, there are other options. Those include the carnivore utopia, Texas de Brazil, Bay Rooftop Bar, and the lobby adjacent to Choices, which has an à la carte menu and buffet option. The buffet offers the typical items you’d expect at a complimentary hotel breakfast buffet, but it’s the smoked salmon, as well as the fresh and candied fruits at the yogurt station, that make the buffet a better post-workout option and worth paying for.

Back to Mutuo, this casino-adjacent more upscale spot is overseen by Chef Jorge Bartolomei and his team. The menu blends two of the world’s finest cuisines with dishes like chaufa fried rice and octopus barbacoa.  There are four ceviche options, and the sushi menu feels like a culinary tug of war, with common Japanese ingredients on each side of the rope and Peruvian on the other. Smoky Guava stands out the most. The standard ingredients, such as shrimp and salmon, are nothing new, but the guava sauce adds a sweetness to this crispy roll that no mayo ever could.

Things to do in the Convention Center District

The T-Mobile Entertainment District is a well-lit enclave within San Juan’s Convention Center District. It’s less than a five-minute walk from the Sheraton Puerto Rico, so you won’t even need to worry about driving to and from. For live music, there’s the 5,000-capacity indoor Coca-Cola music hall, while Caribbean Cinemas VIP is the district’s movie theater.

There are ten different dining options, with Barullo Taberna Española and especially La Central by Mario Pagán being on the higher end. The former has a tapas menu with the juiciest shrimp you’ve ever had, while the latter is a Puerto Rican-influenced steakhouse where the bar is the best seat in the house. Glass bottles filled with lights hang above the circular vat at La Central, creating a star-filled sky feel.

Proximity to Old San Juan

The Sheraton Puerto Rico offers a complimentary shuttle service daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., which takes guests from the Convention Center District to Escambrón Beach and Old San Juan. That gives you the chance to spend a whole day at the beach or exploring the city’s most historic area without having to book accommodations there. If you’re short on time and want a local guide to feed you well while sharing the local history, check out Spoon’s Old San Juan Walk & Taste Food Tour. All of the vendors you visit will be local, chosen from a pool of up to 40. All guests will also get to see where the piña colada was invented in 1954.
